RAINBOW NATION DOCUMENTARY

On May 17, the documentary Rainbow Nation will premiere on IDAHOT, the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia. Canvas will broadcast the documentary on May 18. This documentary highlights the poignant contrast between the South African constitution, which protects LGBTQIA+ rights, and the hate crimes faced by the LGBTQIA+ community on a daily basis: hate, rape, and murder are the fate for many who openly express themselves in South Africa. It is this gap between progressive law and practice that Marieke Dermul & Ilse Schooneknaep illuminate in their documentary through compelling testimonies.

Marieke Dermul

Documentary filmmaker and director.

She has produced various TV formats and documentaries (such as “Pride is Protest!”, “No Filter,” etc.) for Eén and Canvas. In her audiovisual work, she tackles the most sensitive themes in a profound and layered manner, unafraid to confront taboos head-on.

Ilse Schooneknaep

Documentary producer and researcher.

Ilse has been working in the audiovisual sector for over 10 years. She has been responsible for the production of various documentary films and series. She consciously selects audiovisual work that delves into deep human emotions and vulnerability, whether it’s exploring the nuances of life and death, aging, or human rights.
